A massive garbage mountain in the capital of Guinea collapsed onto nearby houses, killing at least 30 people and injuring dozens, while officials rush to find survivors.
Foreign news agencies reported on Sunday, 23 Aug 2026, that a large garbage pile collapsed onto homes in the Dar-es-Salam district of Conakry, Guinea's capital, causing at least 30 deaths and injuring 22 others, with 6 critically wounded.
A statement from the Guinean government said authorities mobilized extensive personnel and resources, including the military, to urgently search for survivors after the garbage pile collapsed around 02:00 local time on Sunday following heavy overnight rain.
A local woman told the media that all five of her children died in the incident, while many fear the death toll may rise further.
Guinea’s Prime Minister Mamadi Ouri Bah visited the disaster site to assess the situation and personally oversee the search operations.
Earlier, local community leader Lansine Silla told AFP he feared a high death toll, saying, “We have already recovered 18 bodies to be sent to the morgue.”
This dump site had a previous collapse in 2017, which resulted in 10 fatalities.
