A 57-year-old British man set a record by traveling across Australia from Perth to Sydney on a human-powered scooter, covering more than 4,500 kilometers in 31 days, 4 hours, and 10 minutes.
Bob Brown from Saltash, Cornwall, England, began his journey in July and completed it in Sydney, finishing the mission last Monday. He aimed to break two Guinness World Records: being the fastest person to cross Australia on a non-electric scooter and the first to cross the route using three methods—running, cycling, and scootering.
Brown said that after a life full of adventures, he wanted to embark on one last major journey at 57 before feeling too old for such a challenge.
This was not Brown's first crossing of Australia. In 2001, he became the first Briton to run across the country, covering about 3,000 miles (4,828 kilometers) in 60 days. He returned in 2003 to cycle the same route, becoming the first person to both run and cycle across Australia.
This time, Brown also aimed to raise £5,000 (approximately 220,000 baht) for three charities: Macmillan Cancer Support, St Luke's Hospice, and Children's Hospice South West.
Besides fundraising, he wanted to send a message to young people to reduce their time spent on screens and digital devices and to get out to experience real-world adventures.
However, the mission was not without setbacks. On the fifth day, Brown was injured when his scooter's side mirror was clipped by a passing vehicle, causing him to skid onto the shoulder. Fortunately, his injuries were minor.
On the final day, with just 20 kilometers remaining, Brown suffered another major accident when his scooter’s handlebar broke while descending a steep hill, causing a severe fall.
Despite these obstacles and accidents, Brown successfully completed his scooter crossing from Perth to Sydney in a total time of 31 days, 4 hours, and 10 minutes.
He has now submitted documentation and evidence of his journey to Guinness World Records and is awaiting verification to see if his achievement will be officially recognized.
