Iran Announces Major Discovery of New Natural Gas Field Exceeding 200 Billion Cubic Meters Amid Energy Sector Impacted by War

Iran has announced the discovery of a new natural gas field in the southern area of Fars Province, with an estimated volume exceeding 200 billion cubic meters, amid the Middle East war that has impacted the country's energy production.

Mohsen Paknejad, Iran's Oil Minister, revealed on state television on Sunday, 23 August, that the new gas field is located in southern Fars Province, with an expected recoverable volume of more than 160 billion cubic meters.

The Oil Minister said the gas from this field is sweet gas, meaning it contains low levels of hydrogen sulfide, or "rotten egg" gas, which helps reduce operational and development costs.

However, Bloomberg News reported that production from this new field may take several years to start due to the need for infrastructure development and production preparations.

This discovery comes at a time when Iran's energy sector has been severely affected by the Middle East war, following attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran since late February.

The attacks have targeted multiple energy infrastructures, including gas plants, oil storage facilities, and transport routes, impacting the country's energy production and operations.

Thus, this new gas field discovery is significant news for Iran, one of the world's largest natural gas resource holders, although it will not immediately increase production capacity.
