On Monday, 24 Aug 2026 GMT+7, Donald Trump, President of the United States, posted on Truth Social that the U.S. will increase import tariffs on cars, trucks, auto parts, and steel to 50%, effective from 1 Jan 2027 GMT+7, following the failure of trade negotiations with Canada.
"If made in the U.S., the tax is 0%! Canada will no longer be treated as a state within the U.S.!" Trump wrote. "In trade and other matters, they are among the most difficult countries to deal with in the world. They feel entitled to various benefits, but the reality is, we do not need to rely on Canada; it is they who need to rely on us!"
The trade negotiations between the U.S. and Canada last Friday (21 Aug 2026 GMT+7) failed, resulting in the U.S. beginning to impose additional import tariffs of 50% on various Canadian products including wine, dairy products, cement, clothing, and hockey equipment. The value of imports affected is about 20 billion U.S. dollars, approximately 5% of total U.S. imports from Canada.
Both sides blamed each other for the failure of the negotiations. Canada is preparing to impose retaliatory tariffs on certain U.S. goods, though details have not yet been disclosed.
On Sunday, the Trump administration warned that Canada would be "foolish" to think it could win a trade war with the U.S., predicting the impact on the northern neighbor would be "severely damaging."
