Japan Accelerates Investigation of Severe Volcanic Eruption in Vanuatu Amid Tsunami Concerns

The Japan Meteorological Agency is urgently investigating whether the violent volcanic eruption in Vanuatu will affect Japan, especially concerning tsunami waves that might reach the country.

Japan's NHK news agency reported that a volcano on an island in Vanuatu, located in the South Pacific Ocean, erupted violently on Tuesday, 25 August 2026. Japanese meteorological officials are quickly assessing whether the explosion will impact Japan, including the possibility of tsunami waves arriving.

The Japan Meteorological Agency revealed that a major volcanic eruption occurred on Ambae Island in Vanuatu at approximately 18:40 on Tuesday, Japan time.

The atmospheric pressure caused by an eruption of this magnitude could trigger a tsunami. The agency stated that tsunami waves could reach the Izu Islands and Ogasawara Islands in the Pacific Ocean as early as about 22:30 on Tuesday.

Officials have urged local residents to closely follow the latest news and updates.
