Trump claims the US has cleared all mines in the Strait of Hormuz and warned it would destroy any Iranian ships attempting to lay new mines, while Tehran continues efforts to strengthen control over this waterway.
On Tuesday, 25 Aug 2026 GMT+7, Donald Trump, President of the United States, posted on Truth Social that the US Navy had cleared or detonated all mines in the Strait of Hormuz amid uncertainty over the strait’s status, which Iran has closed since March.
"Iran has been notified that any ship laying new mines will be destroyed immediately and systematically," Trump's post said, while Iran has not yet commented on this statement.
Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz has caused severe volatility in global oil prices. Trump frequently asserts that the US controls this area, but Iran insists the strait will remain closed until the US complies with its conditions and has fired on vessels attempting to pass without Tehran’s permission.
About 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) was transported through the Strait of Hormuz before the conflict began on 28 Feb, following US and Israeli airstrikes against Iran that killed the Supreme Leader and several senior officials.
Beyond closing the strait, Iran has retaliated by attacking US military bases in various countries in the Persian Gulf region. Although a ceasefire agreement was later reached, it collapsed within weeks, leading to intermittent clashes.
Most recently this week, the US announced major economic sanctions aiming to isolate Iran’s economy. US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned that any country financially cooperating with Iran would also face isolation.
