The Australian music industry has announced a major policy to ban songs created by artificial intelligence from music charts, effective next Monday, amid worries that Generative AI technology could affect artists' careers and earnings.
This measure follows an AI-produced song by an Australian producer that remixed Madonna’s popular track "Like a Prayer" using AI-generated vocals and drums, which reached number 2 on the Australian charts and remained in the top 20 for 16 weeks, currently sitting at number 4.
The Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) stated that songs eligible for the charts must be written by humans, with humans as the lead vocalist and primary instrumentalists. Songs using AI only as part of the production process may still qualify if they meet specific criteria. ARIA also announced that AI-generated songs will be ineligible for the ARIA Awards, the country’s premier music honors.
Additionally, chart-eligible songs must be produced using legally authorized AI services, as some streaming platforms have featured songs possibly created with AI tools trained on artists' music without permission.
Australia’s new rules align with principles set by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) in July, which stipulate that official chart entries must primarily be human-created works.
