Prince Harry and his family have returned to England after reports emerged that he would move back to the United Kingdom following nearly six years living in California, USA.
BBC News reported that Prince Harry and his wife Meghan arrived back in the UK on Tuesday, 26 Aug 2026. It is believed the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, along with their son Archie and daughter Lilibet, flew by private plane from California to England, arriving in Birmingham shortly before noon.
A spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex said, “This is not a matter for us to comment on,” while a source told the BBC that no police protection was observed when Prince Harry and his family left the airport.
This return to England comes after British media last week widely reported that Harry and Meghan would relocate their family back to the UK this August, planning to live as private royals without undertaking official royal duties.
It is expected that the Sussex family will reside at their private property outside London in the Cotswolds area. Meanwhile, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet have registered for school in England, with the new term starting next week.
Prince Harry and Meghan announced their withdrawal from senior royal roles in early 2020, subsequently moving out of the UK to live in California in March of that year.
BBC also reported that King Charles III was informed of this move earlier this month, though details of when and why Prince Harry decided to return to England remain undisclosed.
The Sussex family visited King Charles III at Highgrove House in July, but it is believed that the matter of relocation was not discussed during that meeting.
Before that visit, Prince Harry and his family had rarely traveled back to England, citing security concerns, which have once again become a subject of debate following news of their return.
Prince Harry contested the reduction of his security protection after stepping down as a working royal and moving to the US but lost the legal case in 2025. It remains unclear how his security will be arranged now and who will bear the costs.
A spokesperson for the UK Home Office said, following news of Prince Harry’s return, that decisions regarding royal security protection fall under the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (Ravec), and that the UK government’s security arrangements are “rigorous and proportionate.”
