On 28 Aug 2026 GMT+7, a spokesperson for the Nepal Police Office revealed that the death toll from the massive flood surge near the Nepal-Tibet border has risen to 389. Rescue teams continue to search for survivors amid concerns about possible new flooding.
The Nepal Tourism Board disclosed that 667 people remain missing and unreachable, including 540 foreigners from 31 countries and 127 Nepalis. Indians constitute the largest missing group with 178 people, followed by 65 Americans, 53 Ukrainians, 51 Malaysians, 35 Australians, and 33 British nationals.
Meanwhile, Ms. Jaitai Upakarnitikeset, Director-General of the Information Department and spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that after consulting the Embassy in Kathmandu, Nepal, the area has been severely affected. Basic infrastructure along the Bhote Koshi River has sustained heavy damage, and over 600 Nepalis and foreigners are missing. So far, no Thai citizens have been reported injured or deceased in the incident.
Reports indicate the flood surge occurred last Wednesday, destroying homes, submerging several roads, and washing away multiple bridges. Rescue teams from Nepal and Tibet continue searching for missing persons and those possibly trapped in affected areas.
However, there are discrepancies in the number of missing. Previously, Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office reported 910 people missing and unreachable. Various agencies are still verifying and updating data on the ground, so the figures may change further.
