King Oyo Nyimba of Toro, a traditional kingdom in western Uganda who ascended the throne at just 3 years old and was once the world's youngest reigning monarch, has died at the age of 34.
On 28 August 2026, international news agencies reported that King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the king of Toro, a traditional kingdom in western Uganda, died at the age of 34. The news was announced by Calvin Armstrong Rwomire Akiki, the Prime Minister of the Toro Kingdom, on Thursday night.
Akiki stated that King Oyo died around 10:00 p.m. local time but did not disclose the cause of death. He described the passing as a great loss and confirmed that although the king was not yet married, he had heirs, ensuring the continuity of the royal succession.
King Oyo ascended the throne on 12 September 1995 at the age of just 3, following the death of his father, King Rukirabasaija Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III. At that time, he was recorded as the youngest reigning monarch in the world.
Uganda is a republic with an elected president as head of state, but several traditional kingdoms have existed since before the colonial era. While these monarchies hold little formal political power, they continue to play a significant role culturally and socially.
