It has been six months since the US and Israel launched attacks on Iran, while Iran insists it has been forced into war. The ceasefire agreement has collapsed, and the US is continuing to impose additional sanctions.
On 28 August 2026 GMT+7, it marked six months since the US and Israel began military operations against Iran. So far, there is no sign of de-escalation. The Iranian government remains defiant, affirming that the country has been compelled into war.
Iranian President Masoud Pesechkian said the US should adhere to the memorandum of understanding between the two countries, which aims to end hostilities. He emphasized that issues should be resolved through negotiations rather than countries resorting to war and showing aggression. The memorandum, signed in June, called for both sides to cease fire and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. However, the agreement has had little practical effect as the US and Iran continue to exchange retaliatory attacks.
So far, there is no indication that commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz will return to normal. Before the war, vessels freely used this international waterway. The Strait of Hormuz is a key global shipping route and the main channel for transporting oil from the Persian Gulf region.
