Russia launched a drone strike on a Ukrainian arms depot near Kyiv, causing a powerful explosion that killed 37 people and injured dozens more.
Foreign news agencies reported on Saturday, 29 Aug 2026 GMT+7, that Russian drones attacked a Ukrainian military arms depot located near the suburban boundary of Kyiv, triggering a massive explosion that killed 37 and wounded 42, while about 400 residents nearby were evacuated.
President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed that the attack, which occurred on the night of Friday, 28 Aug, caused shells, mines, and drones stored in the depot to explode violently, damaging nearby buildings including a senior and disabled care facility.
The Ukrainian leader also stated that the arms depot “should definitely not have been located there” and announced an investigation, accusing those responsible of “gross negligence in storing explosives near residential areas.”
Meanwhile, Kyiv regional administration head Timur Tkachenko said among the injured were four elementary school children, and rescue operations in the Bucha district were ongoing on Saturday.
Earlier, Ukraine’s Prosecutor General’s Office disclosed it is urgently investigating the “legality of placing and storing explosive materials” near residential buildings in the village of Myla, and will also probe “the actions of officials involved in this decision.”
Russia's Ministry of Defense issued a statement saying their forces attacked an “ammunition depot” in the village of Myla west of Kyiv, which stored “components and ignition kits for long-range FP-1/FP-2 drones.”
This marks the second time in recent months that an arms depot near Kyiv has been targeted by Russia; in July, an ammunition depot in Vyshneve was hit, causing subsequent explosions that killed nine, injured dozens, and damaged over 280 homes.
In addition to the arms depot attack near Kyiv, strikes occurred in the Boryspil district of Kyiv region, killing a 14-year-old child, and another 2-year-old died after a Russian drone crashed in the Obolonskyi district. Five others were injured in new attacks early Saturday.
Meanwhile, Ukraine continued its strikes into Russian territory, causing two deaths and 25 injuries in the Belgorod and Rostov regions within the past 24 hours.
Ozon, Russia’s second-largest online retailer, revealed one of its distribution centers was hit by Ukrainian drones on Friday night, leading to the suspension of operations at a second distribution center and evacuation of staff due to “risks in the area.”
