North Korea has made a significant reshuffle in its military leadership by removing No Kwang-chol from the defense minister position and appointing Kim Song-ki as his replacement. Meanwhile, senior military officer Pak Jong-chon has returned as vice chairman of the Central Military Commission amid efforts to accelerate the development of North Korea's military capabilities and weaponry.
The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), North Korea's government media, reported that the North Korean government has officially changed top military leadership positions following a resolution from a meeting of the Central Military Commission of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK), chaired by Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un.
The report stated that No Kwang-chol was dismissed from his role as Minister of Defense and demoted to first deputy director of the Munitions Industry Department. The North Korean authorities appointed Kim Song-ki, former director of the General Political Bureau of the Korean People's Army, as the new Minister of Defense.
Additionally, senior military officer Pak Jong-chon was appointed vice chairman of the Central Military Commission and returned to the WPK Politburo after previously losing his post due to suspected health and age issues. This restructuring aims to improve the efficiency and unity of North Korea's military administration.
North Korean state media also released images of Kim Jong Un attending a ceremony awarding national honors and decorations to scientists, researchers, and staff from the National Defense Science Institute, recognizing their success in developing new combat technologies and weapon systems.
Kim Jong Un praised the research team as "the greatest heroes and patriots," describing their latest military technological innovations as a revolutionary advancement in enhancing national defense capabilities. Although North Korean media did not specify the type of weapon, this development follows recent tests of new multiple rocket launcher systems and long-range artillery conducted in late June.
The military reshuffle and announcement of defense achievements come amid rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula, especially after South Korea, the United States, and Japan confirmed plans to conduct a trilateral naval exercise named "Freedom Edge" from 7–11 September in international waters east and south of Jeju Island.
Despite former U.S. President Donald Trump having reduced joint U.S.-South Korea exercises to facilitate negotiations and praising North Korean leadership, North Korea continues a hardline stance by condemning U.S. arms sales to South Korea and regularly testing missiles in response, signaling rejection of Western interference.
