Officials reported the private ferry departed Kyrenia port at 12:30 p.m. GMT+7 and began taking on water for unknown reasons while en route to the Tasucu port in Mersin province, Turkey, in the eastern Mediterranean Sea.
The tragedy occurred off the coast of Kyrenia, a popular resort city for locals and tourists. The ferry involved was a catamaran, part of a daily service connecting Northern Cyprus with Turkey.
Northern Cyprus, officially the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), declared independence from Cyprus in 1983 but is recognized only by Turkey and currently under its control. The international community considers it part of the Republic of Cyprus.
Tufan Erhurman, President of Northern Cyprus, stated that 237 people have been rescued safely, with seven confirmed dead and 23 still missing.
Asked about the cause of the sinking, Erhurman mentioned a cyclone that occurred the previous Saturday but confirmed that weather conditions at the time of the incident were suitable for travel.
“People here are deeply shocked by this event; it is unlike anything we've experienced before... We are very saddened. Everyone is doing all they can and putting forth their utmost effort,” he said during an interview at the crisis management center established locally.
Unal Ustel, Prime Minister of Northern Cyprus, said a large-scale rescue operation is underway. “Our sole priority is human life. All government agencies, security forces, medical teams, and search and rescue units are working together in full coordination,” he said.
