Iran fired missiles and deployed drones to attack two U.S. military bases in Jordan after the U.S. struck Larak Island in southern Iran. Iran claims several soldiers were killed and wounded.
On 31 Aug 2026 GMT+7, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced that Iran launched attacks with missiles and drones on two U.S. bases in Jordan in retaliation for a U.S. strike on Larak Island, southern Iran, on Sunday. This marks a new escalation between the two sides after tensions had eased since late July.
It stated the operation was called 'Punishment of the Aggressor' targeting King Hussein and Al Azraq bases in Jordan. The attack reportedly destroyed technical and maintenance infrastructure as well as enemy warplane deployment areas, causing significant damage. However, there have been no reports of injuries at either U.S. base so far.
The statement added that aggression and crimes cannot solve attempts by the enemy to undermine the Islamic Republic's control over the Strait of Hormuz, warning that any future attacks will be met with even harsher retaliation.
Previously, Iranian authorities announced they would respond to the U.S. after the strike on Larak Island, a strategic area near the Strait of Hormuz. A U.S. official revealed the target was rocket launchers on the island prepared to fire rockets carrying mines into the Strait of Hormuz.
This latest retaliation raises the risk of renewed military confrontations between the U.S. and Iran. Meanwhile, the U.S. government is shifting from air operations to financial pressure measures against Tehran as the U.S.-Israel-Iran conflict enters its seventh month. In recent weeks, the U.S. has claimed control over the Strait of Hormuz and stated that millions of barrels of oil continue to be transported through this vital route under U.S. military protection despite Iran's declared blockade.
