The Iranian president called on the United States to abide by the agreement reached in June after Donald Trump threatened further attacks on Iran and following the first exchange of fire between the two sides in a month.
On Tuesday, 1 Sep 2026 GMT+7, the Iranian president stated that they are ready to reciprocate if the U.S. complies with its commitments under the temporary agreement both sides reached in June to end the conflict. However, tensions remain high after President Donald Trump threatened further strikes on Tehran.
“I want to make it clear that if the U.S. returns to fulfilling its obligations under the memorandum of understanding, the Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to respond in kind immediately,” said Masoud Pezeshkian, the Iranian president, in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit.
The six-month-long conflict has shifted into an economic confrontation before the U.S. launched an attack on Iran's Larak Island on Sunday, to which Iran retaliated overnight with missile strikes on two U.S. airbases in Jordan.
The attacks were followed by reports of two oil tankers being attacked while passing through the Strait of Hormuz, which pushed oil prices steadily higher.
Tehran has consistently emphasized it will allow free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz only if Washington complies with the memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed by both parties in June, but the agreement quickly fell apart.
Fox News quoted Trump on Monday saying, “We will hit them hard... and there will definitely be retaliation,” although the president separately told reporters that this new wave of attacks does not signal a return to full-scale war.
A senior Iranian source told Reuters that the exchanges were a “limited and controlled confrontation” but warned Tehran would respond harshly if attacked again.
