The vice president of Bank of America died after being stabbed by a suspect in Times Square last Monday, while another injured person is receiving hospital treatment.
Foreign news agencies reported that on Monday (31 Aug 2026), a suspect used a knife to stab people in New York City's Times Square, resulting in one death and one injury. It was later confirmed that the deceased was 32-year-old Erin Piacenti, Executive Vice President of Bank of America.
Piacenti served as Executive Vice President of the Business Selection and Conflicts Unit at Bank of America, according to her LinkedIn profile. The New York Police Department (NYPD) revealed that the suspect was a woman with a history of mental illness.
"We are deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic loss of our colleague. She was a valued team member and will be greatly missed. Our hearts go out to her family and loved ones," the US banking giant said in a statement emailed to Reuters on Tuesday.
New York City Mayor Sohraan Mamdani said at a Monday press conference that a woman carrying several large knives stabbed two people in Times Square before police used a Taser and firearms on the assailant. All three individuals were taken to hospital, with one injured victim and the suspect later declared dead.
Bank of America's Manhattan office is located just steps from Times Square at One Bryant Park. The bank also has other financial centers throughout New York City, a hub of the US financial system.
The NYPD identified the suspect as 49-year-old Pamela Cisneros. The attack appeared random and unprovoked, resulting in Piacenti being fatally stabbed. The other victim, a 68-year-old man, was also stabbed but is now stable.
This incident follows last year's fatal shooting of a Blackstone executive, when a gunman carrying an assault rifle entered the Midtown Manhattan office lobby and opened fire.
Additionally, in 2022, a 48-year-old Goldman Sachs employee was fatally shot in an unprovoked random attack while riding a train from Brooklyn to lower Manhattan.
Crime rates in New York City have been a longstanding concern. However, last month NYPD reported that New York had the lowest rates of shootings, shooting victims, and homicides in the first seven months of the year, including July.
