Israeli leaders revealed that special forces raided and arrested the head of Hamas's security in the Gaza Strip, while Palestinians reported that the Israeli attack caused four fatalities.
On Tuesday, 1 Sep 2026 GMT+7, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu disclosed that Israeli special forces had captured the head of Hamas's internal security office during a ground operation in Gaza, alleging the man was involved in efforts to restore Hamas's governance in Gaza and deceive regarding disarmament.
“He is one of the highest-ranking leaders of Hamas and responsible for hiding and transporting our hostages, providing shelter to senior Hamas figures, as well as accumulating military power and attempting to restore the terrorist organization's capabilities,” Netanyahu added.
The Israeli military and the Shin Bet security agency revealed that the special forces entered a building in Gaza City on Tuesday and arrested Hamas's internal security chief in the Gaza Strip before transferring him to Israel for interrogation.
Meanwhile, medical officials in Gaza reported that Israeli airstrikes during the incursion killed at least four Palestinians, including two children and one woman. Hamas condemned Israel's actions as a “serious crime” and a violation of the ceasefire agreement.
On Tuesday morning, Palestinians in the Katiba area west of Gaza City reported heavy Israeli bombardment, with two vehicles destroyed. Online videos showed scenes of chaos, gunfire, and damage following the attack.
Palestinian media reported that Israeli special forces and Israel-backed Palestinian armed groups opposing Hamas entered the area but were discovered, while some Israeli outlets stated only local armed groups conducted the ground operation.
A Palestinian security source told the BBC that Israel's operation targeted senior officials in Hamas's internal security office.
Ismail Al-Thawabta, spokesperson for the Hamas-run Gaza government information office, said, “Israeli special forces attempted a security operation in Gaza City, but they were exposed during the mission.”
He added that the ensuing Israeli attack “resulted in several deaths and injuries, including multiple casualties among the special forces members.”
