The Royal Mint of the United Kingdom delights Star Trek fans by releasing a special 50 pence coin commemorating the 60th anniversary, marking the first time Star Trek has appeared on a British coin minted in the UK.
The Royal Mint has launched a collectible 50 pence Star Trek coin to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the legendary sci-fi franchise, issuing two designs. This is the first time Star Trek has appeared on a UK 50 pence coin.
The first coin design was released on 3 September 2026, while the second design is scheduled for release this November.
The first coin carries the theme "Live Long & Prosper."
The first coin features the Vulcan salute symbol, widely recognized by Star Trek fans worldwide, along with the phrase "Live Long & Prosper" and the inscription "Star Trek 60" to mark the 60th anniversary.
The second coin, due for release in November, showcases four starships from the Star Trek universe: U.S.S. Voyager, U.S.S. Enterprise, Enterprise-D, and the Klingon Bird of Prey.
Both designs incorporate elements from various eras of Star Trek, including television series and films, reflecting the franchise’s long history since its start in 1966.
For collectors, some coins will feature added color, using blue and purple hues to depict nebulae, representing the vastness of space.
The Royal Mint notes that these colors also reference the bright uniforms worn by the original Star Trek cast, designed to stand out clearly on color televisions when the series first aired in 1966.
This Star Trek coin release is part of the Royal Mint’s efforts to blend pop culture with collectible coins. Previously, the Mint has issued sci-fi themed coin collections, selling nearly 800,000 coins to collectors in 60 countries worldwide.
