Iran attacked U.S. military bases in Kuwait in retaliation for recent American strikes, ignoring President Donald Trump's threat to escalate attacks if Iran responded.
On Thursday, 3 Sep 2026 GMT+7, Iran launched an attack on a U.S. airbase in Kuwait to retaliate against prior U.S. strikes, disregarding President Donald Trump's warning of heavier attacks if Tehran responded amid renewed conflict in the six-month-long war.
Trump stated that his military was prepared to strike Iran “whenever we want,” following U.S. airstrikes across various Iranian locations last week that killed at least 19 Iranians.
Tehran retaliated by targeting U.S. military sites across the Middle East, including Kuwait, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Iraq's autonomous Kurdistan region.
These clashes have further worsened the prolonged war, with Iran maintaining a tight blockade of oil export routes in the Strait of Hormuz while the U.S. pressures by blockading Iranian ports in response.
Iranian Security Chief General Mohsen Rezaei warned the U.S. that Iran has adopted a “new strategy” in the war that “will destroy your foundations.”
The Kuwaiti military said on Thursday it is intensifying efforts to intercept Iranian missile and drone attacks, while Iran’s state TV confirmed Tehran is targeting U.S. bases in the Persian Gulf region “to retaliate against U.S. crimes against the Iranian people.”
The latest wave of retaliation began when Washington struck Iran’s Larak Island last Sunday for the first time in over a month, citing efforts to prevent Tehran from placing naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran stated the Sunday attack caused “casualties,” prompting retaliation targeting U.S. forces in Jordan and the United Arab Emirates.
Beyond military actions, Washington also vowed to cut off Iran’s economic routes by threatening sanctions against Iran’s trading partners.
U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright said on Wednesday that expanding sanctions to Iran’s economic allies will apply “maximum pressure.”
