Reports citing government and military sources stated that the government is preparing to seek parliamentary approval, potentially submitting a motion for consent by September after cabinet review.
The support forms under consideration by the South Korean government range from maritime patrol aircraft and logistical supply vessels to mine detection and clearance units.
South Korea is also discussing with several countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and France, to determine the appropriate scale and nature of support.
The mission aims to uphold freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial shipping lane connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and serving as a major route for energy exports from the Middle East to global markets.
However, South Korea’s presidential office, the Blue House, clarified that while discussions on concrete ways to contribute to maintaining freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz are ongoing, reports claiming the government has already decided on the deployment method are inaccurate; details remain under government consideration.
This development comes amid close scrutiny of security relations between South Korea and the United States, following U.S. President Donald Trump’s August social media post stating he had partly reduced joint U.S.-South Korea military exercises because South Korea declined to support the U.S. in a potential war with Iran.
