Russia launched a drone attack directly on the Ukrainian Security Service headquarters in central Kyiv for the first time since the war began, resulting in 12 injuries amid eight consecutive days of ongoing attacks.
On 4 Sep 2026 GMT+7, foreign news agencies reported that Russian drones attacked the Ukrainian Security Service headquarters in Kyiv during daytime. This marks the first time a key building of this agency has been targeted since the Russia-Ukraine war began over four years ago, causing 12 injuries and prompting rescue teams to quickly inspect the area.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the drone targeted the office of Oleksandr Poklad, head of the Security Service, located inside the building. However, the Security Service later confirmed that Poklad is safe and unharmed.
President Zelensky said he ordered Poklad to carry out an appropriate retaliation against Russia that would have a clear impact, ideally in a manner consistent with the nature of this attack once preparations are complete. He added that the Ukrainian military will support any retaliatory operations.
The attack followed nearly eight days of near-continuous Russian airstrikes on Kyiv, hitting multiple buildings in the city center as well as warehouses and factories in the suburbs. Since this wave of attacks began in August, at least 53 people have died and 134 have been injured in Kyiv and surrounding areas, amid Ukraine's severe challenges with its air defense systems.
