A 64-year-old woman miraculously survived after being trapped beneath the rubble of a collapsed house caused by a severe flash flood for 10 days before officials found and rescued her on Saturday.
Foreign news agencies reported that rescue teams safely pulled a Nepalese woman from her home buried under thick mud and debris on Saturday (5 Sep 2026) after the region was severely hit by flash floods and landslides 10 days earlier.
Nepalese officials cheered as 64-year-old Chandrika Shrestha was pulled from a buried house in Nuwakot district, covered in mud.
“Police found her while clearing the area. She was airlifted to Kathmandu for treatment,” Deputy Police Chief Iqbal Hawari told AFP.
Emergency disaster response teams have been tirelessly searching for survivors since massive waves of mud and water, resembling a tsunami, hit the China-Nepal border following a glacier and rock collapse on 26 August.
Earlier, rescuers had saved a Chinese man who survived inside a tunnel at the Upper Trishuli-1 hydropower project in Nepal's Rasuwa district.
The National Disaster Management Authority reported that 1,344 people have died in Nepal so far, with approximately 5,000 still missing. Chinese state media reported 31 deaths and 531 missing on the Chinese side.
