Explosion at Bolivian Military Camp Kills 2, Injures Many

An explosion at a military camp in Bolivia has caused at least two deaths and injured dozens more, while officials are concerned that the death toll may rise.

On Saturday, 5 Sep 2026 GMT+7, Ernesto Justiniano, Bolivia's Minister of Defense, disclosed that a pyrotechnic device exploded at an artillery military camp around 14:30 local time on Friday, 4 Sep, resulting in two confirmed deaths, 81 injuries, and 14 missing persons.

Reuters reported, citing an interview with health official Rita Nebraska on local television, that the death toll is estimated between 10 and 15 people from the incident in Viacha, approximately 30 kilometers from La Paz.

Police revealed that dozens of homes suffered damage from the blast, and rescue workers are urgently searching for survivors beneath the rubble.

Nebraska warned of the risk of secondary explosions and urged residents to maintain a distance of at least 150 meters from the military base.

Colonel Antonio Amaru, base commander, told reporters on Saturday that the missing include one sergeant and 13 conscripted soldiers aged between 18 and 19.

Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased and injured, pledging a thorough, technical, and transparent investigation into the incident.
