A Greek military fighter jet crashed and exploded in flames during an aerial display, resulting in the deaths of both pilots who did not eject from the aircraft.
Greek news agency ANA reported that an F-4 Phantom fighter jet of the Greek military crashed on Saturday, 5 Sep 2026 GMT+7, at a base outside Athens during an airshow, killing both pilots.
Local media reported that the plane had just taken off when it suddenly lost altitude, crashed, and immediately exploded in front of thousands of spectators attending the annual "Athens Flying Week" airshow.
Details and causes of the incident remain unclear, but the pilots did not eject from the aircraft.
After the crash, Greek authorities dispatched several firefighting aircraft to the site to control and extinguish the blaze caused by the crash.
The "Athens Flying Week" event was promptly canceled after the incident, while Nikos Dendias, Greece's Minister of National Defence, canceled a planned trip to an international trade fair in Thessaloniki to inspect the crash site.
