The US special envoy has met with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Moscow and participated in closed-door talks to find a way to end the Ukraine war, which has dragged on for more than four and a half years.
On 5 Sep 2026, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, key negotiators for President Donald Trump, met with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin in Moscow. They held closed-door talks for three hours to promote Trump's "Ukraine war-ending proposal."
Prior to the talks on Saturday, Russia and Ukraine agreed to a three-day ceasefire of airstrikes on each other's capitals to support the negotiation process. Putin emphasized that this did not include other areas of Ukraine beyond Kyiv.
Although no details of the discussions were disclosed, Putin revealed that he felt "comfortable" and had a high level of trust in this delegation. He thanked Trump for his peace efforts while acknowledging that the current situation "is not easy."
Following this, the US representatives are scheduled to travel to Kyiv on Sunday (6 Sep) to meet President Volodymyr Zelensky, marking the delegation's first visit to Ukraine.
On the same day, Ukrainian leaders accused Russia of bombing airports in Kyiv and Boryspil overnight into Saturday, as a show of force to pressure the US delegation's travel routes. They also reported attacks on civilian buildings in the Dnipro region, causing four deaths and five injuries.
This visit follows a quiet trip to Moscow last week by CIA Director John Ratcliffe. Despite multiple negotiation attempts with European allies, agreements to end the Ukraine war remain stalled over key issues such as territory and security guarantees.
In the current conflict, Ukraine is facing shortages of missiles to intercept Russian air attacks, while Ukrainian forces increasingly target Russia's economic infrastructure, significantly impacting Russia.
