A tense incident occurred on an American Airlines flight when a 67-year-old man became violent, hurling racial and gender slurs and physically assaulting other passengers. Former police officers and passengers restrained him with cable ties and tape, securing him to a seat. The captain decided to make an emergency landing before police took him into custody for prosecution.
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Maryland Transportation Authority Police (MDTA) reported that a disruptive passenger incident occurred on American Airlines flight AA 618, which departed Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, Texas, bound for Newark Liberty International Airport. The captain was forced to divert the flight for an emergency landing at Baltimore-Washington International Airport.
The incident took place in first class when Arthur Lundeen, 67, from Arizona, began acting aggressively, using offensive language and shouting racial and sexist insults at crew and passengers. Despite crew efforts to control him, Lundeen became more violent, physically attacking a nearby passenger and a woman who tried to intervene.
As the situation escalated, Juan Mejia, a former New Jersey police officer, and passenger Richard Olenik, seated nearby, decided to restrain Lundeen immediately. The crew provided plastic handcuffs to bind his wrists, but Lundeen resisted, attempting to bite Mejia and Olenik. Consequently, the group used tape to secure Lundeen to his seat, leaving space around his mouth to avoid restricting breathing. Olenik also sat on Lundeen’s lap for over 15 minutes to prevent him from escaping until the plane landed safely.
After landing at Baltimore airport around 22:15, MDTA officers boarded the plane and took Lundeen into custody, transferring him to medical staff for treatment of an open arm wound. He was charged with public disturbance and assault. The FBI also joined the investigation into the in-flight incident.
American Airlines issued a statement affirming, “The safety of our customers and employees is our highest priority. The airline does not tolerate any form of violence and thanks our crew for their professionalism as well as all passengers for their understanding.” The flight continued to Newark after the suspect was handed over to authorities.
According to the FAA, tape and plastic handcuffs are standard equipment on many commercial aircraft to handle violent passengers. This year alone, there have been over 1,160 reports of unruly passenger behavior. Offenders may face criminal charges and FAA fines exceeding $43,000 for assault, threats, or interfering with crew operations.
