The death toll in Tibet from severe flooding that struck the Himalayas along the China-Nepal border last month has risen from 31 to 43, while search efforts remain difficult.
China's Xinhua News Agency reported on Sunday, 6 Sep 2026, that the glacier and landslide disaster in the Himalayas along the Nepal-Tibet border on 26 Aug has resulted in 43 deaths in Tibet and 519 people still missing.
Yesterday, Nepal reported 1,344 deaths from the disaster and about 5,000 people missing, highlighting the large discrepancy in fatality and missing persons figures, which reflects the challenges faced by rescue teams trying to access the heavily damaged border area.
Gyirong Port, located deep in the Himalayas along the China-Nepal border, was severely affected by the disaster.
Experts told CNA that it may take more time to determine the true death toll, as flood-borne rock debris likely buried many victims. Additionally, flood currents may have carried victims several kilometers away.
India previously disclosed that they found dozens of bodies believed to have floated down a river connected to Nepal.
