A five-story student dormitory building in New Delhi collapsed, resulting in one confirmed death and more than 50 people believed trapped under the rubble.
International news agencies reported that a five-story residential building in New Delhi, the capital of India, collapsed around 13:30 local time on Sunday, 6 Sep 2026 GMT+7, leaving at least one person dead and two critically injured. So far, six people have been rescued.
The building, named “Hostel Daze,” is located in the Satya Niketan area in southwest New Delhi, near the University of Delhi campus, and houses many students.
Witnesses told the media that over 50 people were inside the building at the time of the collapse because it was a Sunday with no classes. Prior to the collapse, construction work was underway in the basement, but the exact cause of the collapse remains unclear.
A member of the legislative assembly revealed that some students trapped under the rubble tried calling for help by phone.
Another witness told local media that an adjacent building next to the dormitory also collapsed. Delhi Governor Rekha Gupta said the neighboring building had been completely evacuated “as a precaution.” She added, “We are doing everything possible to safely rescue those trapped inside.”
Delhi police stated that the collapsed building was about 40-50 years old. Nearby shop owners told ANI news agency that the building was under a 100-year lease and the tenants had excavated the basement to increase revenue.
"They reinforced the upper part of the building, but the supporting columns below were weak," he said, adding that construction workers were also trapped under the debris.
The Indian National Student Union has demanded the government investigate the cause of the collapse and bring those responsible to justice, affirming, “We will not tolerate negligence regarding the safety of students and the general public under any circumstances.”
Meanwhile, the Times of India reported that police are currently searching for the building's owner for questioning.
