King Charles III of England has confirmed that Prince Harry and Meghan, who recently decided to move back to England, will not resume royal duties on behalf of the royal family and must be financially independent.
On Monday, 7 Sep 2026 GMT+7, the British royal palace issued a letter on behalf of King Charles III clarifying the official status of Prince Harry and Meghan, Duke and Duchess of Sussex, after the couple relocated from California to reside in the United Kingdom with their son and daughter, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
The letter from the Privy Council clearly states that both Prince Harry and Meghan remain "private individuals," are not permitted to use the titles "His/Her Royal Highness" (HRH), and are not authorized to perform royal duties on behalf of the monarchy.
Additionally, the 2020 Sandringham Agreement, which sets the terms for Prince Harry and Meghan's withdrawal from senior royal duties, remains in effect to prevent any “semi-official and semi-commercial” status. The couple will no longer receive taxpayer funding and must be fully financially self-reliant.
Any charitable activities or engagements they participate in going forward—including support for the Invictus Games—are considered personal matters and will not be recognized as official royal duties. Any agency with questions regarding hospitality or public funding should contact Buckingham Palace directly.
Security protection in the United Kingdom remains under the responsibility of the Ravec Committee and the relevant police forces, as it is outside the jurisdiction of the royal household.
Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, arrived back in the United Kingdom on Tuesday, 26 Aug 2026 GMT+7. It is believed the couple traveled with their son and daughter, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, by private jet from California to Birmingham, England.
This return to England by Prince Harry and his family follows media reports the previous week in the UK announcing that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex would relocate back to the United Kingdom in August but would not resume official royal duties, living instead as non-working members of the royal family.
It remains unclear what prompted Prince Harry and Meghan’s decision to move back to England after their split from the Windsor royal family in 2020. The BBC reported that King Charles III was informed of this relocation in early August.
Recently, Prince Harry made his first public appearance at a TV studio and podcast location in London. Reports also indicate that their son and daughter will attend school in England, and Meghan may consider returning to acting.
