US officials revealed that an Amazon plane that skidded off the Miami airport runway collided with two vehicles, killing all five people in those vehicles. Authorities have now recovered the black box.
On Monday, 7 Sep 2026 GMT+7, Jennifer Homendy, chair of the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), held a press conference to update on the Amazon cargo plane accident that skidded off the Miami runway and struck vehicles, causing a fire and five fatalities on the preceding Sunday.
Homendy stated that Amazon Air flight 7598 had two crew members onboard and had arrived from Puerto Rico on Sunday. The plane skidded off the runway at Miami International Airport while attempting to land, then struck a white Ford van belonging to a cleaning company carrying seven occupants.
The plane then broke through the airport perimeter fence and hit a Toyota Corolla traveling on 67th Avenue before coming to rest nearly 400 meters from the runway.
Homendy confirmed that all five fatalities were vehicle occupants. Additionally, five people were injured. The condition of the two crew members onboard the plane has not been disclosed.
The NTSB chair said investigators arrived at the crash scene at 18:00 local time on Sunday and remain on site conducting their work.
Authorities have recovered both black boxes—the flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recorder. However, the NTSB emphasized that recovering the victims' bodies remains their highest priority.
The investigation will focus on the EMAS system (Engineered Materials Arrestor System), designed to slow aircraft at runway ends to reduce impact forces, as well as the commercial relationship between Amazon and 21 Air, the contracted cargo carrier for this flight.
Homendy described the incident as "deeply tragic" when asked by reporters about the scene. She said, "It is a difficult sight to witness, and I am sure it was very challenging for the first responders who arrived at the scene."
