Trump posted a map suggesting that all territories in North America, including Canada, Mexico, Greenland, and Iceland, are part of the United States, prompting a negative reaction from Icelandic authorities.
Foreign news agencies reported that Donald Trump, the former president, sparked widespread discontent after posting a map showing the territories of Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Mexico, and Caribbean countries colored with the U.S. flag pattern to imply these areas belong to the United States.
The image was posted on the Truth Social platform last Monday without any additional explanation. It is one of several images Trump has shared over the past week, attempting to rename or reassign ownership of various territories, including a map claiming the Strait of Hormuz belongs to the U.S.
On Tuesday, Iceland responded to the map by summoning the U.S. ambassador to clarify that the image is "highly inappropriate."
Meanwhile, Canada is caught in a trade war with Washington, after the U.S. imposed 50% tariffs on many Canadian imports last month following failed negotiations. Canada's retaliatory tariffs came into effect on Tuesday.
Trump has consistently stated his desire for Canada to become the 51st U.S. state to avoid tariffs. Earlier this year, he clearly expressed interest in acquiring Greenland, citing the need to counter Russian threats, which drew strong opposition from European countries.
Throughout the past week, Trump has posted dozens of AI-generated images, including a cartoon depicting himself playing ice hockey against Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. In the image, Trump is shown saying to Carney, who is lying on the ice rink, "Get up, governor."
In another post, there is an image showing Trump welcoming George Washington, the founding father and first U.S. president, in the Oval Office of the White House.
