Volodymyr Zelensky revealed that talks between Ukraine and Russia could occur within this month, even as Moscow launched a new heavy assault on Kyiv resulting in multiple casualties.
On Tuesday, 8 Sep 2026 GMT+7, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky disclosed that negotiators from Russia, Ukraine, and the United States might meet as early as this month to discuss ending the war, just hours after Moscow launched intense missile and drone attacks on Kyiv.
The mayor of Kyiv reported that the heavy overnight attacks caused three deaths and thick smoke rising over the capital following the end of a three-day ceasefire, which was intended to allow U.S. delegates to visit Kyiv.
Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, representatives of President Donald Trump, visited the capitals of Russia and Ukraine over the past weekend to negotiate with both Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin on ending the war that has lasted over four and a half years.
Although no concrete agreement has been reached, Zelensky said on Tuesday there is hope to revive direct talks between Russia and Ukraine within the next few weeks.
"We are all preparing and pushing to bring about a trilateral meeting between Ukraine, Russia, and America soon," Zelensky told reporters. "If all parties agree, we aim to hold it in the fall; having it in September would be excellent, the sooner the better."
Previous rounds of talks have failed to bring the two sides closer to an agreement. Moreover, trust between Ukraine and Russia remains low, with no indication that Moscow or Kyiv will adjust their positions.
However, the visits by Witkoff and Kushner signal Washington's renewed attempt to mediate negotiations between Ukraine and Russia after efforts stalled following the U.S. engagement in war with Iran in the Middle East.
Witkoff spoke of "significant progress" in discussions with Ukraine and Russia, which has raised hopes for reviving trilateral peace talks.
"President Trump is working hard to stop the killings and push toward lasting and permanent peace," Witkoff stated via X.
