Russia and Ukraine have escalated air strikes against each other, resulting in numerous deaths and injuries, including two victims at the Ukraine-Moldova border.
On Wednesday, 9 Sep 2026 GMT+7, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed that 2 people were killed and 3 injured in a Russian drone attack on the Starokozache border crossing between Ukraine and Moldova, prompting authorities to immediately close the checkpoint.
This incident occurred amid heavy long-range air strikes exchanged between Russia and Ukraine, despite ongoing diplomatic efforts to end the war.
Regarding the attack on the Ukrainian side, the Starokozache strike caused the reported casualties, with one injured being a Moldovan truck driver. Moldova's prime minister noted that in August alone, 17 Russian drones violated Moldovan airspace.
In Kyiv, a Russian drone hit a nine-story building, killing 1 and injuring 14, including 2 children. In Sumy, a drone attack on a shopping mall resulted in 3 deaths and 20 injuries.
The Russian Defense Ministry claimed to have shot down 596 Ukrainian drones in a single night. However, several Russian cities still suffered damage from drone attacks, causing numerous casualties.
The Russian port city of Novorossiysk was heavily attacked by Ukrainian drones, resulting in 4 deaths—including one child—and 29 injuries. Residential buildings, a church, and a kindergarten were also damaged.
Meanwhile, Ukraine claimed to have sent drones to attack large oil and natural gas refineries in Novy Urengoy in Russia's Arctic region, over 3,000 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, aiming to disrupt Russia’s war supply lines.
This new wave of attacks came just one day after Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke by phone with U.S. President Donald Trump about ways to end the war.
Over the past weekend, a delegation from Trump visited both Russia and Ukraine to push for direct talks between the two countries. Ukraine expects talks to possibly occur this month, but Moscow insists it is too early to discuss dates or locations for negotiations.
