Democratic members of Congress in Texas sharply criticized Donald Trump after he announced a plan to distribute $5,000 dividends to each adult American if the Republican Party retains a House majority following the midterm elections.
Trump announced this idea during a Republican Party meeting preparing for the midterms, held in Dallas, Texas. He claimed that the U.S.'s economic success would allow the government to pay this money to citizens, comparing it to company dividend payments.
However, the plan could cost more than $1 trillion and its feasibility has been questioned, given that the U.S. is facing an annual budget deficit of nearly $1.8 trillion.
Trump had previously proposed dividend payments to Americans, suggesting $2,000 per person and stating that congressional approval would not be necessary.
Following Trump's stance, Democratic representatives opposed the proposal. Representative Madeleine Dean said, "He is not sane and is delusional," while Representative Robert Garcia accused Trump of being known for lying and insisted that such dividend payments would not happen.
This $5,000 payout proposal comes as Trump seeks new methods to retain Republican seats in the midterm elections, a period when the president's party typically risks losing House seats, while his popularity has sharply declined.
