Jeremy Thomas, Oscar-Winning Film Producer, Dies at 77

Jeremy Thomas, a legendary British film producer who won an Oscar for the film The Last Emperor, has died peacefully at the age of 77.

Foreign news agencies reported on 12 Sep 2026 that Jeremy Thomas, an Oscar-winning film producer known for The Last Emperor and Sexy Beast, passed away at 77, surrounded by family and loved ones at his home in Oxfordshire on Friday (11 Sep).

Thomas built an international reputation over a career spanning more than five decades, working with many famous directors such as David Cronenberg, Nagisa Oshima, Julian Temple, and Nicholas Roeg, supporting independent films alongside successful mainstream projects.

His best-known work is The Last Emperor by director Bernardo Bertolucci, which won nine Oscars including Best Picture, earning Thomas the Oscar as producer in 1988.

Thomas continued collaborating with Bertolucci, producing The Sheltering Sky, Little Buddha, Stealing Beauty, and The Dreamers.

He also worked with several emerging British directors early in their careers, including Ben Wheatley, Jonathan Glazer, Stephen Frears, and David Mackenzie.

Other works by Thomas include Nagisa Oshima’s Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence starring David Bowie; Cronenberg’s A Dangerous Method; Reig’s Bad Timing and Eureka; Fast Food Nation; The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle; and adaptations of J.G. Ballard’s novels Crash and High-Rise.

Starting his career as a film editor mainly in London, Thomas first became a producer on the 1976 Australian film Mad Dog Morgan.

In 2006, he received an award from the European Film Academy and was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2009 New Year Honours.

Thomas’s final work was a collaboration with Japanese director Takashi Miike on Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo, set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on Monday (14 Sep).
