A Russian drone crashed into a Ukrainian train near the Polish border shortly after the train carrying a delegation led by former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson departed.
Foreign news agencies reported that a Russian jet-powered drone struck the locomotive of a Ukrainian train at Yahodyn station, only 2 kilometers from the Polish border. There were no injuries or fatalities, as Ukrainian authorities evacuated passengers 15 minutes before the incident.
The incident took place shortly after the train carrying former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and European security advisers passed along that route returning from a meeting in Kyiv.
Additionally, at the time of the incident, David Petraeus, former director of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), and Carl Bildt, former Prime Minister of Sweden, were on a nearby train.
Ukraine Railways stated that the Russian drone may have been targeting a “diplomatic train,” but the train in question had departed early due to schedule adjustments made to avoid threats. Russia, on the other hand, claimed it was a routine attack on rail-related infrastructure.
Following the event, Boris Johnson condemned the attack as senseless and damaging to civilian rail systems, urging allies to promptly deliver air defense systems to Ukraine.
The Ukrainian Foreign Minister described the attack near the border as a form of Putin’s terrorism, likening it to “knocking on the door” of the EU and NATO.
Meanwhile, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk convened an emergency meeting to address the escalating conflict approaching Poland’s border.
Russia has intensified strikes on Ukraine’s railway transport and border crossings in recent months, severely disrupting main travel routes for civilians due to the airspace over Ukraine being closed since the war began in 2022.
