On Sunday, 13 Sep 2026 GMT+7, US President Donald Trump stated that the US might enter Iran and "take the oil," comparing this to the case where the US pushed to control a vast crude oil resource amounting to one-fifth of Venezuela's reserves.
During his trip to Ireland for meetings and to watch the Irish Open golf tournament, Trump reiterated his hope that the Iran war would conclude within this year, possibly immediately after the US midterm elections in November.
Trump added that gasoline prices would "plummet like a rock" as soon as the Iran war ends.
However, the turmoil in the Middle East continues to heavily impact the oil market, with analysts and oil buyers forecasting oil prices to rise again on Monday (14 Sep) following last week's attacks on oil pipelines in Saudi Arabia.
Donald Trump reiterated that he would only accept a "right deal" and would not agree to a "bad deal," adding that Iran had "called repeatedly" to seek peace talks—a claim Tehran had previously denied.
Nevertheless, the US president also revealed another option: maintaining a presence in Iran. He illustrated this by comparing it to the agreement the US made with Venezuela, which was disclosed last August.
"Ultimately, we will withdraw (from Iran) unless we decide to stay and keep the oil, just like we did with Venezuela," Trump said, adding that the revenue the US received from Venezuela "has more than paid for the costs of the war multiple times over."
