Trump said, "Robots will not take over the world, and AI will not take over the rest of the world. This whole thing is a scam." He added that critics of AI are "playing into the hands" of many people who don't want technological progress, possibly including political factions and China.
Trump also supported the construction of large data centers, a hot topic in the U.S., calling data centers "great" and saying they will bring wealth to people and states. He compared data centers to "the oil of the next 20-25 years" and said they are more important than the internet and AI in some respects. However, he acknowledged that such efforts must be carried out carefully and cautiously.
Trump joked that Huang could develop the most complex computer chips that no one could copy but couldn't figure out how to turn on the phone's speaker for him. He then reassured Huang, "I'm fully behind you."
Huang responded that Nvidia will benefit all parties in the U.S. AI competition—industries, companies, states, and the general public. He agreed when Trump said he believed both shared the same stance on AI development.
Trump's position comes amid intense debates in the tech world about the pace of AI development. Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, recently published an article urging the industry to slow AI model development and implement stricter safeguards. This proposal has been supported by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, and several AI experts.
Several researchers from leading AI companies have resigned recently, expressing concerns about safety. Some warned that the technology could pose severe risks to humanity.
Meanwhile, Trump used his platform on Truth Social to attack those calling for a slowdown in AI and data center development, calling their concerns a "disgusting conspiracy," a "scam," and "fraud." He said he saw no need for additional AI regulations and claimed that calls to halt data center construction arose because the U.S. is leading other countries in building AI infrastructure.
Trump warned that opponents of data center construction are playing into the hands of those who do not want the U.S. to advance in AI development, possibly including China, and emphasized, "We will not let that happen."
Nvidia, one of the world's largest AI chip and hardware producers, plays a key role in the expansion of AI data centers across the U.S. Trump's relationship with Huang has grown closer; Huang serves on Trump's Science and Technology Advisory Council and helped persuade Trump last year not to deploy the National Guard into San Francisco.
Huang has also lobbied U.S. lawmakers to ease restrictions so Nvidia can export more products abroad. However, some legislators warned that such relaxations might benefit China and undermine U.S. technological leadership.
This conversation took place as U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson said industry leaders should lead in setting AI safety measures, following Democratic calls to end the congressional recess early to consider AI safety legislation.
Johnson stated on Monday that Trump will hold a meeting with AI industry leaders. Sources familiar with the matter confirmed preparations are underway, but no date has been set yet.
Nvidia has not commented on the conversation between Huang and Trump, nor confirmed if they will meet soon to discuss these topics. The onstage discussion was recorded in videos shared by attendees on X and in a podcast Huang was recording at the time. Chamath Palihapitiya, one of the event co-hosts, posted after the summit, "This is surreal."
