Nepal has increased the number of missing persons from the flash floods at the end of August by nearly 1,000, bringing the latest total to 6,150.
On Wednesday, 16 Sep 2026 GMT+7, Nepal's Disaster Relief Office raised the missing persons count from the late August floods by nearly 1,000 after compiling and verifying data from affected areas, bringing the total to 6,150.
"We collected details of the missing from district offices and updated the figures after confirmation," said Shanti Mahat, spokesperson for the Disaster Relief Office, to AFP.
This figure is up from the previously reported 5,179. The Disaster Relief Office also stated that 1,403 deaths have been confirmed so far, with only 105 identified by name.
On the Chinese Tibetan side, which was also heavily affected by the flash floods on 26 Aug, there have been 43 reported deaths and 519 missing.
Among the missing are several hundred foreigners, including tourists and pilgrims.
The flash floods, caused by a massive glacier collapse on the Nepal-China border in the Himalayas, were unprecedented in scale and damage. The Nepalese government has attributed this severe event to the effects of rising global temperatures impacting the Himalayas.
Nepal estimates the cost of recovery and rehabilitation from this major flood to be as high as 4.78 billion US dollars.
