Donald Trump posted a message expressing dissatisfaction with the US Federal Reserve's decision to raise the benchmark interest rate for the first time in three years, contrary to his desire for continuous rate cuts.
On Wednesday, 16 Sep 2026 GMT+7, Donald Trump, US President, posted on Truth Social his displeasure over the Federal Reserve's decision to raise the benchmark interest rate for the first time in over three years, stating that rates should be cut to 1% or lower because the US is the world's most credible country.
"Interest rates in the United States should be at 1% or lower because we have the best credit in the world, by far," Trump stated.
"Our country is growing rapidly due to new investments! If we stopped trading with every country we run a deficit with—which is nearly all the countries we trade with—we would gain at least $1.5 trillion annually."
"The word ‘deficit’ is just a fancy term for ‘loss.’ We are effectively supporting almost every country in the world, and this cannot continue. Lower interest rates for the United States immediately! President Donald J. Trump."
Earlier, Kevin Warsh, Chair of the US Federal Reserve, held a press conference following the FOMC's decision to raise interest rates by 0.25% to a range of 3.75% – 4.00%, emphasizing that the hike was due to inflation being “too high for too long,” while summer inflation data showed no significant improvement trend.
He acknowledged risks from Middle East conflicts, such as the energy price crisis caused by the Iran war, affecting inflation trends. However, with unemployment steady around 4.1%, the Fed can pursue tight monetary policy to control inflation without severely impacting the labor market.
Warsh declined to comment on Trump's reaction to the rate hike but affirmed the Federal Reserve's independence, stating that Fed decisions are based on economic data and the core mission of managing employment and inflation, uninfluenced by political or financial market pressures.
