Princess Diana’s brother exposes King Charles in a new book, revealing the king was reportedly pleased with Diana’s death, while Buckingham Palace counters that grief may distort memories of the narrator.
Earl Spencer, Princess Diana’s brother, raises new allegations against King Charles III in his new memoir, citing a conversation with King Charles III after hearing of Princess Diana’s death in 1997.
The book recounts that after the car accident in Paris on 31 August 1997, which caused Princess Diana’s death, Prince Charles (his title at the time) called him.
Spencer claims that unlike others who called to express condolences and offer support, Prince Charles’s voice sounded "very happy," which Spencer remembered vividly, comparing it to someone who just won the lottery.
According to Spencer’s account, Prince Charles also told him that he was the one who informed Princes William and Harry of their mother’s death that morning while they were at Balmoral Castle.
Buckingham Palace responds.
The allegation comes after Buckingham Palace recently disputed parts of the book, which previously claimed that Prince Charles once said about Diana, "We will forget her soon enough."
A palace spokesperson stated that while they generally do not comment on books, King Charles III recognizes that the pain of losing a family member can affect a person’s reasoning, decisions, and memory in ways others may not perceive—even after many decades.
Meanwhile, Dickie Arbiter, former press secretary to Queen Elizabeth II who served during Princess Diana’s death and funeral, denied the claims, affirming that Prince Charles was deeply saddened and that Spencer’s allegations do not align with his character.
Arbiter added that the claim is merely Spencer’s memory of events that happened nearly 30 years ago.
Unveiling the troubled marriage of Diana and Charles.
The new book also reveals stories about Princess Diana and Prince Charles’s marriage. Spencer claims that Diana’s friends told him that before their 1981 wedding, Prince Charles said he was happy to marry her but did not love her.
Spencer wrote that their marriage faced serious problems early on, and he believes both felt despair toward each other at times.
The book also covers later periods of Princess Diana’s life, including claims about her mental state and the difficulties she faced before her death in a car accident in Paris in 1997.
"Swan Song: Diana, My Sister" is scheduled for release next week. The BBC reported it has not seen the full book, and the allegations are Spencer’s personal recollections and statements.
Prince Harry, Diana’s son, has not commented on the book. His representative said he does not wish to make any statements.
