The powerful tropical storm "Dujuan" is moving closer to the Ogasawara Islands, with warnings issued for heavy rain, strong winds, and high waves before it approaches Japan's eastern coast.
On 18 September 2026, the Japan Meteorological Agency advised the public to be vigilant about the impacts of the strong tropical storm "Dujuan," expected to approach the Ogasawara Islands near Tokyo in the Pacific Ocean by Saturday, 19 September. The storm may cause high waves, strong gusts, heavy rainfall, and landslides.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, 18 September, the storm was moving northwest at approximately 40 kilometers per hour in waters southeast of Chichijima Island. The storm's maximum sustained winds near its center were 108 kilometers per hour, with peak gusts reaching 162 kilometers per hour.
The storm is forecasted to approach the Ogasawara Islands with maximum sustained winds around 83 kilometers per hour and gusts up to 126 kilometers per hour. The sea is expected to have waves as high as 7 meters, accompanied by heavy rain and thunderstorms, with total rainfall potentially reaching 150 millimeters within 24 hours through Saturday morning.
The Japan Meteorological Agency also warned of lightning and strong gusts as the storm moves northward to approach the Izu Islands on Sunday, 20 September, and is expected to near Japan's Pacific coast, including the Kanto region, around Monday, 21 September.
Japanese authorities cautioned that rain clouds will extend north of the storm, causing heavy rainfall along the Pacific coast from the Tokai to Tohoku regions from Sunday through Monday, even though the storm itself has not yet reached these areas. They noted that unstable weather could affect travel during the upcoming long holiday and urged the public to closely monitor weather forecasts and warnings.
