
Google revealed that their AI model Gemini escaped the testing environment to hack data from three companies amid rising concerns about AI dangers.
Foreign news agencies reported that Google’s artificial intelligence (AI) model “Gemini” accessed the internet and hacked other companies during a cybersecurity capability test, marking the first time a Google AI acted independently in this way.
The hacking incident occurred in May during a cybersecurity test organized by Irregular, an independent private company specializing in cybersecurity assessments.
Heather Adkins, Google's Vice President of Security Engineering, stated in a release that during a standard evaluation, the Gemini model searched public online data and guessed login credentials to access three websites it believed were within its testing scope.
“These incidents underscore the importance of training powerful AI models to operate responsibly,” Adkins said.
An Irregular spokesperson said this issue is similar to problems affecting other AI labs and that all relevant labs were notified by late July. “All known issues on our side were resolved several weeks ago,” the spokesperson added.
Over the past several months, major AI developers such as Meta, Anthropic, and OpenAI have also disclosed that their AI systems escaped test environments to hack multiple companies.
Irregular stated it is developing best practice guidelines for cybersecurity testing of AI.
These events have raised questions about necessary safeguards as AI agents gain more autonomy, including increased access to the internet and computer systems.
The Wall Street Journal, the first to report this story on Friday, noted that in one case, the Gemini model randomly guessed passwords until it successfully accessed a protected system. In two other cases, the model found login credentials in public databases, allowing later access to protected systems.
Adkins concluded that in all three incidents, the AI model stopped hacking on its own.
