Donald Trump announced the creation of an “AI Force” and the appointment of a special overseer (AI Tsar) to supervise and advance this technology, while firmly stating there will be no halt or delay in AI development.
On Saturday, 19 Sep 2026 GMT+7, U.S. President Donald Trump announced via Truth Social that the United States would establish a new task force called the “AI Force,” along with appointing a “special overseer for artificial intelligence” (AI Tsar) to supervise and promote this technology amid increasing warnings about AI's risks and dangers.
“I am setting up an ‘AI Force,’ just as I established the ‘Space Force,’ which was a great success during my first term. To that end, I will soon appoint an ‘AI Czar’—only those with high IQ should apply!” Trump’s message stated.
Trump affirmed that his administration “will not obstruct or hinder the growth” of the AI industry and opposes calls to slow AI development, but rather the U.S. will “nurture, support, and watch it grow!”
Trump compared AI to a new industrial revolution or the next internet era but said it would be larger and more impactful, potentially accounting for up to 25% of U.S. GDP. He emphasized the goal of maintaining U.S. leadership over China in AI—a key issue in the competition between the two powers—and expected this topic to be discussed in his upcoming meeting with President Xi Jinping next week.
“AI is the next industrial revolution or internet era but will be bigger and more impactful, possibly contributing up to 25% of our nation's GDP. We are ahead of China and the rest of the world, and I intend to keep that lead!” Trump’s message stated.
Trump reiterated that concerns about AI’s dangers are a “hoax” and said the government will use existing civil and criminal laws to deal with those misusing AI, rather than imposing new regulations to control the industry.
Trump’s move follows warnings from experts and CEOs of major U.S. AI developers who have raised alarms about the technology’s potential threats to humanity, with some estimating over a 10% chance that AI could “destroy all humans.”
Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic (developer of Claude), Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI (developer of ChatGPT), and Elon Musk, owner of xAI, have called for slowing down AI development, demanding industry oversight and the establishment of independent regulatory bodies.
Meanwhile, Jack Clark, co-founder of Anthropic, has proposed that regulations might require installing a “kill switch” that can be monitored by third parties for emergency shutdowns.
Congress members are pushing for AI regulatory legislation, but Sam Altman believes the government cannot keep pace with technology and urges the public to trust that AI companies will act responsibly on their own.
The UK Parliament’s Joint Committee on Human Rights (JCHR) has stated that existing laws are insufficient to handle AI’s rapid growth and called for new legislation to seriously address human rights risks posed by AI.
