Two elderly men argued on a beach in Greece over a beach bed, resulting in the death of an 82-year-old man while a 76-year-old man was arrested by police.
Foreign news agencies reported on 20 Sep 2026 that an 82-year-old man died following an altercation with a 76-year-old man over a beach bed at Vouliagmeni Beach near Athens, the capital of Greece.
Witnesses said the two elderly men initially argued verbally, but the situation escalated into a violent fight that involved others.
Another witness told the Greek newspaper Kathimerini that the scene was extremely chaotic, with screams audible across the beach.
Reports indicate that the 76-year-old man was arrested, while a 21-year-old woman accompanying him was detained but later released. A witness told the daily newspaper Ta Nea that she had facial swelling and bleeding.
During the fight, the 82-year-old man lost consciousness and collapsed. Several media outlets reported he received CPR and defibrillator (AED) treatment before the ambulance arrived. He was then taken to a hospital where he later died.
Another witness said the deceased appeared to be waiting for someone and had reserved the beach bed, which likely sparked the initial dispute. Authorities are investigating the circumstances that led to the fight and the death.
