Facebook and Instagram experienced outages worldwide. Users in several countries, including Singapore, the United States, the Philippines, Australia, and Mexico, reported being unable to access the websites.
Users of Facebook and Instagram in multiple countries reported issues accessing the platforms. In Singapore, problems were reported in the morning, while the system status tracker Downdetector recorded about 220 reports for Facebook and around 120 for Instagram at approximately 09:20 local time.
Most reports indicated an inability to access the Facebook and Instagram websites. Users in other countries such as the Philippines, Australia, the United States, and Mexico also experienced similar issues, suggesting the outage may be widespread globally.
In the United States, Reuters reported that thousands of users submitted issues through Downdetector. At 21:11 on 20 Sep local US time, there were over 17,000 reports of problems with Facebook and more than 5,000 for Instagram.
These figures from Downdetector represent user-submitted reports and cannot be directly used to determine the actual number of affected users.
Facebook and Instagram are platforms owned by Meta, which has experienced similar outages several times this year. In June, both platforms went down in multiple countries, including Singapore, the Philippines, India, Australia, Canada, and the United States. In July, service issues occurred again in Singapore. To date, the exact cause of the latest outage has not been specified.
