The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated they are investigating the shooting of 28-year-old Venezuelan Wilber Rafael Garces Perez, whom DHS identified as an undocumented immigrant. However, details and the cause of the incident that occurred on Sunday afternoon remain unclear.
On Monday, dozens gathered at the scene waving Mexican and Guatemalan flags and holding signs demanding ICE leave Austin.
Austin Mayor Kirk Watson and Texas State Representative Greg Casar, both Democrats, called for a full independent investigation and for the release of officers' body camera footage, emphasizing that Austin residents have the right to know the truth and feel safe in their city.
This incident comes amid heightened enforcement and immigration crackdowns during President Donald Trump's second term, fulfilling campaign promises to strengthen border control and carry out large-scale deportations.
