Iranian police raided a large drug shipment in Tehran, discovering 55 kilograms of pure cocaine from Colombia valued at about $2.4 million, or 80 million baht. This marks a rare large-scale cocaine seizure in Iran.
Iran's state television reported on 21 September that the operation was conducted by Tehran's narcotics enforcement unit. In addition to cocaine, authorities seized 3 kilograms of methamphetamine, as well as significant amounts of opium, cannabis, and other psychoactive substances.
Major General Abbasali Mohammadian, commander of Tehran police, revealed that since March, officials have confiscated nearly 6 tons of drugs. However, this seizure represents a rare large cocaine haul in Iran.
Iran is considered a major drug trafficking corridor due to its location between Afghanistan's drug production areas and markets abroad. Drug trafficking in Iran carries severe penalties, including the death penalty. United Nations data indicates that more than half of Iran’s executions in 2024 were related to drug offenses.
