On Monday, 21 Sep, MTV and CBS announced that this year's MTV Video Music Awards will introduce a new accolade called the Artist-Director Award. This award recognizes artists who play key roles not only in front of the camera but also behind the scenes—in directing, producing music videos, and conveying stories visually. The first recipient of this award is singer Taylor Swift.
MTV stated that this award honors artists whose work continuously influences the industry, pushes creative boundaries, and develops a distinct directing style.
Taylor Swift, a 14-time Grammy winner, is among artists who have consistently directed their own music videos and films. She has been nominated seven times for Best Direction at the MTV Video Music Awards and has won four times.
Her noted works include "The Fate of Ophelia," "Opalite," and "Anti-Hero," reflecting Swift's role as a visual creator alongside her career as a singer and songwriter.
Beyond her directing achievements, Swift is also a female artist who has won the Grammy Album of the Year four times. Her latest album, "The Life of a Showgirl," achieved the highest first-week sales of any current-era album, according to Billboard citing data from Luminate, a music sales tracking company.
This year's MTV Video Music Awards will take place on Sunday in Los Angeles, hosted by Snoop Dogg. The event will be broadcast live on CBS and MTV, and streamed on Paramount+ in the U.S. International viewers can watch via Paramount+ and MTV the following day.
